The launch of the 'SmartStreetSensor' Footfall Project

30 June 2016 by Noelle Ghanem

The Local Data Company (LDC), in partnership with University College London (UCL) and the Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC) launched on Thursday June 30th, the most comprehensive study of High Street footfall patterns across Great Britain to date.

This ground-breaking project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) will allow us to understand how our high streets are used, how they are changing and what actually impacts footfall patterns.

1,000 sensors will measure live footfall in 81 towns and cities across the UK. LDC has spent 18 months developing and testing its SmartStreetSensor which has been developed and built in the UK.

We had the pleasure to have Prof Paul Longley, Director at CDRC coordinate the conference, starting the event by asking the audience to reflect on what is happening around them, in their cities and towns. Matthew Hopkinson, Director at LDC, then discussed data collection and explained how 'real people' are behind this data. "We are data creators" says Matthew.

The final presentation was given by two researchers from CDRC, Jens Kandt and Roberto Murcio, along with Phd student Bala Soundararaj, sharing how they intend to conduct the research, identifying challenges they may face with a project of this nature and explaining how they aim to overcome these.

The event was closed with an energetic question and answer session and lunch for more networking!
