The labour market remained robust with 32.21 million people in work by the end of 2017. The talk in political circles about the ‘squeezed middle’ is filtering through into the retail and leisure sector with various CVAs and administrations announced in the first few months of 2018." How are John Lewis leading the way with their click-and-collect service?

In their recent weekly sales figures, market leading department store, John Lewis, reported an increase in sales across all their departments on the same week in 2016 (week 32). Overall fashion sales were up +7.5%; primarily driven by womenswear, which increased by +21.5%. Electrical and Home Technology sales grew +9.2%, facilitated by a +53% increase in sales of Apple MacBooks by matching a competitor's promotion - proving the retailer remains true to its price-matching slogan “Never Knowingly Undersold”. Overall, total sales for the week climbed by +5.9% year-on-year.

We will be hosting our 14th Retail and Leisure Summit at BLP's offices in London on Tuesday 20th September. With almost 300 people signed up already, it looks like this will be our most popular summit to date.

LDC's 5th Retail Market Trends in Pictures

On Wednesday, 30th March 2016, we held our 5th Retail Market Trends Summit at Hogan Lovells' offices in London. At the event, Matthew Hopkinson presented the latest analysis of openings and closures activity for both independent and multiple retail and leisure occupiers across Great Britain's shopping locations in 2015.

We had the pleasure of welcoming a diverse panel of retail industry experts including: Damien Wild - Editor of the Estate Gazette (who chaired the panel discussion), Anthony Newton - Senior Associate at Hogan Lovells, Eva Pascoe - E-commerce Director at TheRetailPractice, Andrew Angeli - Head of UK Research at CBRE Global Investors, and Michael Weedon - Deputy CEO of bira.
