Morrisons are filling up their basket with new products and services: but will this be enough to continue to cash in at the checkout?

Last week Morrisons celebrated the fruits of their labour over the past few years, announcing a 3.4% increase in sales for the first quarter of this year.

Under the Chief Exec David Potts, Morrisons has gone through a period of huge change, investment and overhaul, and have been rewarded with the best quarter for the business since 2009.

Playing it safe with Safeway: Morrisons bring retro brand back - but only into independent convenience stores

News broke this week that Morrisons will be bringing back the Safeway brand after an 11-year absence from shoppers’ shelves.

Morrisons will produce Safeway branded food products which will be sold wholesale into independent convenience stores across the country from early next year.

The latest report by LDC looks at the growth of the Convenience Stores over the last five years (2011 - 2015).

This report looks at the fastest growing convenience stores assessing the fastest growing retailers' convenience store formats and which towns are seeing the most new stores.

Matthew Hopkinson, Director at LDC comments: "Whilst supermarkets continued to grow their larger store formats over the last five years it has been their convenience store formats that have been growing at twice the rate of these formats."

A new report published today, looks at the growth of the supermarkets and the discounters from 2010 - 2015.

The report analyses growth by fascia and by town and identifies how and where the main stream supermarkets have seen growth in competition and thus loss of market share as the discounters have opened up around them.

Whilst the number of supermarkets grew by 33% in the last five years, the discounters have grown significantly faster at 52%.

Competition in the grocery market continues to intensify as Iceland looks to roll out new concept stores
